Chicago is indeed a city rich in culture and continues to keep a strong eye towards fashion. In observance of Fashion Focus Chicago 2009, the Gene Siskel Film Center will be bringing back the documentary "Valentino: The Last Emperor," showing this film this Thursday, October 22 through next Thursday, October 29. It was directed by Matt Tyrnauer of Vanity Fair Magazine and features the inner circle of haute couture king Valentino Garavani, his extravagant three-day retirement marathon, and plenty of footage featuring the elite of the fashion world. General admission is $10. This is a must for anyone who loves fashion & wants to get a "behind the scenes" view on what it takes to be called an "Emperor" in fashion. Although I have seen the documentary once, I can't wait to see it again! A women can never overdose on beautiful fashons.

Men of Style: An Interview with designer Adam Lippes

I recently sat down with Adam Lippes at Neiman Marcus on Michigan Ave. to view the Spring 2010 collection for his line, ADAM. At 36 years old, Lippes has quite the resume. After graduating from Cornell with a degree in psychology and attending the American University in Paris to study art history and architecture, Lippes returned home to try a hand at what he was really passionate about: fashion. He began his career at Ralph Lauren before moving onto Oscar de la Renta where he quickly rose to Global Creative Director. Although his background is somewhat nontraditional, he brings a truly fresh approach to fashion’s contemporary market. Today Lippes has three of his own freestanding boutiques and his collection is featured in 300 other stores around the world.

BG: What is your definition of style?

AL: Confidence.

BG: How would you define confidence?

AL: Having an air of strength about oneself.

BG: What is a perfect outfit for you?

AL: A white v-neck T-shirt, a pair jeans, a great belt, great shoes, and a great watch (he really likes Cartier).

BG: What is your fixation/obsession with the white T-shirt?

AL: The T-shirt is the foundation of my brand, and a white shirt and jeans is the foundation of American Sportswear. I walked into my first meeting with Oscar wearing a white v-neck T-shirt, a pair of dark skinny jeans, a great belt, great shoes, and a great watch. I didn’t know. I was just a kid. Oscar turned, looked at me and said, ‘Can everyone look at this new young man? He looks rich.’”

BG: What trend would you like to see disappear?

AL: I don’t like hard-edged clothes on women—the biker tough/rocker look—I like refinement.

AH: What was the biggest lesson you learned from Oscar de la Renta?

AL: To pay attention to how a woman feels in the garments I create. He refined my use of color, quality and my eye for style. He also taught me to give a garment a second chance. Not to hate it immediately, but to give it time. Don’t judge a piece at the first look.

AH: What was the biggest lesson you learned from Ralph Lauren?

AL: To do it right—period. He also taught me the beauty of marketing.

BG: How has the current economic situation affected your designs?

AL: I know the recession has hurt a lot of Americans, but our brand hasn’t been greatly affected. Our spring bookings are up 48% from last year. I think that the styles have been affected. Fashion has been the same for too long and I believe that now is a time of creativity. Designers are trying new things that have haven’t been seen or done before.

BG: Why have you decided to add the sizes 14 and 16 to your Spring 2010 collection?

AL: When I began my career in design, I wanted to recreate American sportswear. I love that it has a certain ‘sporty chic-ness’ and allows the customer the ability to mix and max the pieces. American Sportswear offers a certain wearability and fit—sizing is a huge aspect of this. There’s nothing worse than a woman who can’t wear something she loves because of sizing.

BG: I know you have a passion for philanthropy. Tell me about the organizations you are involved in.

AL: Art is my passion. I’m the co-chair of the Whitney Museum of American Art and a partner of the New York Humane Society- I have a love for animals. I own two labradoodles from Australia. I am also active in fundraising for the Sandra F. Lippes Foundation at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in honor of my late mother.

RB: If you could have lunch with anyone, alive or deceased, who would be sitting across the table from you?

AL: My Mother. She inspired my style and Oscar refined it.

BG: What is your single biggest fashion influence?

AL: Art- mid-century American artists; and people on the streets.

BG: If you could move fashion in a certain direction, where would you like to see it go?

AL: I’d like to see the whole fashion schedule turned upside down- have shows for consumers instead [of buyers and editors] and buy during the same season they are shown.

BG: Tell me something about yourself that would surprise me.

AL: I have a farm upstate where I love to escape to in the Berkshires.

Just under the knee & over-the-knee lengths are some of the more popular choice with added embellishments like fringe & studs. Yes, these boots are made for walking, at least, until the snow arrives! For me, I still favor my dependable biker boots.

"Fat" Model Fired at Ralph Lauren

If "fat" means a beautifu, 5'10" model weighing 120 lbs and wearing a size 4, women need to demand some changes. Fillipa Hamilton was a successful model at Ralph Lauren from the age of 17 years old. Today at 23, Ralph Lauren canceled her contract claiming she did not live up to her agreement. The company air brushed an ad of the model to make her look like a size "0" which distorted her entire image. When are women going to protest? When Cindy Crawford was a super-model, sample pieces were a size 6 or 8. Today samples are a size 2 or 4. What is this doing to our self-esteem and young women everywhere. I will never get tired of supporting women of all sizes as we are all beautiful!!

Plus Size Models Embrace Curves

Hats off to Glamour Magazine for celebrating real women, as in models with curves. The November issue has a beautiful photo spread with seven plus-size models who bare all. Oh, did I mention they are sizes 10, 12 and 14 as in real women. Yes, you guessed it. Any model that isn't a 0, 2 or 4 is considered a plus-size model. I am especially proud of Glamour magazine, where I worked for six years, when I was launching my print career. I thought it was an honor to be a part of an impressive publication that had the courage to break rules on past taboos with excellent stories & real fashion. Let's hope that women will stand up and support magazines that are trying to reach real women. Let's remember women of all sizes are beautiful.

Doing Your Research Before Committing to a Convention or Modeling School

If you live in a remote area and do not have access to a larger market, i.e. Chicago, New York, Miami, LA, a modeling school or convention can be a great way for you to get started in the business.

There are many advertisements for modeling schools and conventions. Some are legitimate and others are not. You must do your research before spending any amount of money! I answer emails on a daily basis with general questions regarding schools and conventions so do not hesitate to ask questions and get referrals.

A legitimate convention can give potential models the opportunity to be seen by agents from all over the world at one time. The costs can be staggering; however, most of these conventions also offer workshops on the industry as well as photo shoots.

Development plays a huge role in the progression of a new model. Most modeling agencies will do their own development in-house and therefore it is not necessarily required for a model to go to a modeling school first. However, reputable modeling schools not only teach the skills that are useful in modeling but can also offer guidance on personal confidence, poise and style which you can apply in all areas throughout your life. Many of the modeling schools end their classes with attending conventions which is a way for the students to be the most prepared when they meet the multiple agents.

If a company is asking you to pay a signing fee and has no written contract of what they are responsible for, they may not be a reliable company. Any school or convention should list exactly what they provide, i.e. classes (the subject and number), photo shoots, promotion to clients and/or agencies, length of representation, etc. You should not sign anything that limits you to exclusively work with that company as it may keep you from signing with an agency in the future.

Check with open calls first. If you do not have the money to invest in conventions you can attend open calls at almost every agency at no cost. Some agencies only have open call once a week, however, at Elite Chicago you may attend any day of the week promptly at 3:30p.

Always keep in mind that modeling schools and conventions are not a guaranteed entrance into the modeling industry. There are no guarantees in this industry and if someone tells you there are, they may not be a trustworthy source. As discussed in week one, as agents we can only give you the opportunities to meet the clients, but it is up to them to confirm you.

Knowing Your Niche as a Model

Last week, we discussed the “typical” requirements of high fashion models of print and runway. The most “important” requirement is height with a range of 5’7” to 5’11” between the two divisions. If you do not meet the height requirements for being a high fashion print or runway model, though, there are different areas that you could take advantage of in the modeling industry that are unknown (or overlooked) by the general public because they may not hold the glamour of high fashion.

The largest and most prominent area to look into outside of runway and high fashion is commercial print modeling. The main difference between commercial print and high fashion print is that commercial print is product-based. For every product there is a demographic that is targeted; different types of models will get more favorable responses among different demographics. Not only is there a variety of heights that can be used, but age, size, and looks can also vary greatly. As they appeal to different consumers, there are different attributes that clients look at when choosing commercial print models: character, lifestyle and girl/guy next door.

All three of these types fit a certain niche and represent the real world.

Character models play a role: A 65-year old male will be more likely to listen to medical advice from someone who looks like a stereotypical doctor rather than a chiseled male model.

Lifestyle models fit a demographic: The average mother of three probably won’t buy laundry detergent from a waif-thin 15-year old with smoky eyes and stiletto heels.

Girl/guy next door does not overpower the product: They are beautiful to look at without overshadowing the product and distracting the target demographic.

Although these are not as known and don’t typically come to mind when we think of “models”, they are just as important and present as a high fashion model and in much more demand. A successful model is a versatile model. In Chicago, a model can have a career as a high fashion model, a commercial model or even both!

This week I had to take another mammogram test after a concern over my last test in the past ten days. As I sat in my green robe, along with seven other anxious-looking women dressed with identical robes, I was hopeful that we would all receive good news. After close to four hours, repeated mammogram testing and an ultra-sound, the radiologist gave me the happy news that I didn't need to return until next year. While all this was extremely stressful, I couldn't help but acknowledge how lucky women are today to have all the latest equipment to determine early detection of breast cancer along with our own monthly self exams.

Hopefully one day, with continued research and awareness, we will find a cure. Please encourage all your female friends to get a mammogram.

Take care of yourselves; we deserve it.

OK - We all know that fashion is partially based on change and taking chances. Thus, I'm going to take a chance and predict that Chicago is going to get the 2016 Olympics before the announcement on Friday. I admit that initially I may not have been enthusiastic about this idea when I thought about all the seats on my 157 bus being occupied or that my taxes may be increased again. But, now I am totally past all those negatives and 100% in favor of the the Olympics in Chicago. I will jump up and shout with Chicago pride when the announcement is made. If, per chance we don't get the bid, it has still been a fun ride to embrace all the beauty in the city I love.

Week #1

The Client Sets the Standard for The Model

The most often asked question of a model scout is “What are you looking for?” Essentially a scout is looking for what the client is asking for. However for me it goes beyond that and is not something I can put into words such as hair or eye color for me it’s the “it” factor. I could be on the lookout for months searching for the next blonde-haired, blue-eyed beauty but I’ll be stopped in my tracks when I see a red head and will want to offer her a contract because I know she has “it”.

Sure, there are requirements for high-fashion models. However, most things can be altered as needed such as skin (if broken out), hair (cut, color, correct) or body (gain/lose weight). We even work with models to be more outgoing and personable if they’re shy or introverted. Of course, we cannot change a model’s height. As agents, we know we see beautiful people of all shapes and sizes, but we also know what most clients are looking for, and that usually but not always, entails specific heights.

It is the clients, not the agents, that set the standards for which the agents scout for. If a client has to promote their next season’s garments and they want to hire models to help sell it, they look at the sizes and measurements of those garments and in turn call an agency to request that size of model.

The Chicago market is unique because it is more flexible with their requirements than primary markets such as New York or Paris. Chicago clients are typically looking for something more diverse and therefore there is more leeway with height. Women should be between 5’7” to 5’11” for print modeling and 5’10” to 5’11” for runway modeling. A lot of people like to point out that Kate Moss is only 5’6”, and there are exceptions to any “rule” in modeling just like anywhere else. Keep in mind, however, that there is much more to making model than just height and beauty, and a young woman with an exceptional personality can make up for whatever other differences she might have.

With all of the television coverage and glamorization of the modeling industry, there are many pretty people out there that want to be models and so a potential model has to bring something unique to the table and the best way to do it is with a dynamic personality.

Trend Alert: Cowl Neck Sweaters

London Fashion Week Spring 2010 is making big news, no pun intended, because Canadian-born London Designer Mark Fast used what he called three normal sized models ( sizes 8 & 10) instead of just the ultra-skinny models we see walking down fashion runways. This choice caused his stylist & casting director to walk out on him before the show. Luckily another stylist & director came on board for a successful show. I thought we could finally accept women of all sizes as being beautiful? Is there some unwritten law of fashion that says only women of sizes "0" and "2" can embrace fashions? Hats off to the designer for having the courage to prove that women of many sizes can look good in fashion.

It's Important to Know You're Precious!

I love reporting on fashion but some of you know of my dedication to supporting teenage students and those who need mentoring. I wish we could eliminate the word "hopeless" from our vocabulary when we are talking about teens. When I volunteered for Maggie Daley's "After School Matters" program at IIT, I was impressed by the level of intelligence of these students that had been kicked out of several schools because they didn't have role models or mentors. Sometimes something so special comes along that requires all our attention. In this case, it is a movie supported by our own Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry called Precious based on the novel Push by Sapphire. It is the story of an overweight black teenager who is impregnated by her father twice and has little hope or self-esteem, until she meets the character played by Mariah Carey. We all need to reach out to help someone today to give them hope.

Marisa Murillo is a woman who knows how to follow her dreams. A Yale graduate in economics and law school at USC lead her to the position of Associate at Kirland & Ellis. Her chic style is about always looking professional but with an edge of being both modern & elegant. Even during her pregnancy Marisa continues to dress with her exceptional style.

My friend Marisa is someone who enjoys giving back as she was a guest speaker for my class at IIT with students from "After School Matters." I sat down with her recently to unfold her secrets to success and dress.

Barbara Glass: What is your definition of style?

Marisa Murillo: Style is using your clothes to express a part of yourself and your identity. If you're not using your clothes as a form of self-expression, then in my opinion you can't honestly say that you have great style. Your clothes should communicate for you when you enter a room. For example, if I have a meeting, I want my clothes to be well tailored and pressed as a way of saying that I'm on top of things. My mum and my grandmother are very savvy dressers; they instilled this in me.

BG: So I usually ask the people I interview to describe a perfect outfit for them - but, since you are now several months pregnant, I thought it would be fun to ask you to describe your perfect maternity outfit!

MM: My ideal outfit is a loose-fitting dress -- I have a great one by Marni -- over maternity leggings. For work, I will choose a more polished loose-fitting dress and ballet flats.

BG: What are you looking forward to wearing from your closet after you have your baby?

MM: I love to wear dresses and jackets with fitted waists. Since my first trimester, these have gotten pushed to the back of the closet, but I'll wear them again soon.

BG: Where is your favorite place to shop in Chicago?

MM: It's a toss up between Barney's and Blake. Also, believe it or not, Ebay has wonderful vintage clothes.

MM: Shorts and high heels, whether they are boots or platforms, do not appeal to me. Shorts and opaque or patterned tights do not appeal to me either.

BG: What advice would you give to someone who wanted to follow in your footsteps as a lawyer?

MM: (1) I would tell them to work very hard. There's a steep learning curve in this profession so you've got to work a lot in your early years to absorb everything coming your way. (2) I would also advise them to find a few good mentors. Unlike other professions, practicing law is a vocation -- like being a seamstress or a goldsmith. Someone has to take you under their wings and show you how to do this. There is no replacement for having a mentor to guide you and support you. (3) I would tell them to take their vacations -- always -- to avoid burn out.

BG: Tell me something about you that would surprise people.

MM: I'm a Texan. I was born and raised in Houston, TX and I've been to the rodeo.

How To Choose Perfect Makeup Brushes For Your Flawless Application

Why spend good money on makeup and use poor tools because the key to great makeup is choosing the perfect brush for your makeup application. There are so many shapes, sizes and brush bristles to choose from and each brush is designed for a specific task. Now it's up to you to determine what you are missing in your brush collection and what you would like to achieve with your makeup that you may be lacking because of the quality of your brushes.

Like most makeup artists I prefer natural bristles for color and powder. Natural bristles come in various types of material which are used for layering color with a variety of touches from very soft (squirrel) to firm (badger). I use my synthetic bristles for foundation, concealer and cream pigments. Synthetic brushes are man-made of either nylon or polyester filaments. The advantage of synthetic is that they are prone to less damage, easier to clean and better suited for layering cream pigments.

Here is the insider on different types of brush bristles and what they do:

-Badger is stiff enough to define and shape, good to fill sparse eyebrows.

-Capra (Goat) provides a medium to full application for face and body.

-Kolinsky comes from the tail of Mink and has the best porosity for application for the most intense, truest form of color and is the best for precise layering. It is also considered a professional grade of hair and if properly cared for, it will last for many years.

-Pony is great for creating a smoky eye. It is soft but strong and used for blush or eye brushes because they are great for contouring and you can dampen the brush to provide opaque coverage or use dry to create a soft color.

-Sable is from the (Weasel Family) it is an alternative to the Kolinsky brushes because it is less expensive but similar performance durability.

-Squirrel works great for contouring and blending to perfection. Perfect for detailing and for using in the crease. The softest Squirrel is the gray or blue.

Now it's time to clean your brushes and I always treat my brushes as if were my hair because they are an investment and you want them to last. I like to wash my personal brushes once a week with my shampoo and I even condition them. Try a hydration shampoo to put back moisture into your brushes. You can always use a brush cleaner to clean them in between uses but they are very drying. Make sure to use your conditioner or even a hair mask or a protein treatment to keep them in perfect condition. Always lay flat to dry so put them on an edge of a table with a towel on the floor to catch the water. if you lay them flat on the towel with nowhere for the water to drip then you have the chances of them getting mildew. Never dry your brushes in a cup standing because the water drips down and gets into the glue and can loosen the bristles and damage the wood. I like to air dry my brushes so they can dry in their natural shape using a blow dryer makes them way too fluffy.

Attention fashionistas: don't walk, run to see the latest documentary The September Issue, directed and produced by the award winning RJ Cutler. As the former Fashion Editor at CS Magazine for six years, along with other publications, I can honestly tell you that Mr. Cutler has captured some of the pain and passion I experienced upon seeing the final execution of my team's work when the fashion pages were edited. In this case, the editing is performed by editor in chief Anna Wintour. No, this not about calling this woman the "B" word; this is about reality. Ms. Wintour has a story to tell that will seduce women to shop and help them to continue to care about fashion in the 840 page, one of the largest issues in the history of Vogue. Grace Coddington, one of the finest stylists in the magazine world, exhibits rare moments when we can see her painful reaction as her photographs are rejected with little regret or respect for her work. This is about business; its nothing personal. And who could argue with the 57 year old editor, who yields more power that Oprah in the world of fashion, and has run the most profitable magazine of its time? Any one person that is, or has plans to major in fashion journalism, photography or modeling must see this film for a dose of reality. Yes, I do admire Anna Wintour for her work of excellence and continued passion to bring us fashion that we crave. And by the way, pay attention to Anna's hands that are void of a manicure or polish, which is something we have in common. Who has the time when you have deadlines, children and a dog!?

World Fashion Chicago 2009

Did you ever wonder who is the force behind some of the most exciting fashion shows in Chicago? Tracey Tarrantino is the powerhouse fashion producer who is producing World Fashion Chicago for the fourth year in a row on September 30th, a highlight of the Chicago Sister Cities and our design community. She has also worked internationally producing shows in Berlin, as well as bi-coastally traveling with Cintas and Levis. In Chicago she has also produced shows with Chanel, Max Mara, Escada, Luca Luca, Ultimo, Oprah, and various magazines and charities. Along with her great sense of knowing what looks best on her size 2 frame, Tracey's best style embraces giving back to the Chicago community that she loves and continues to support.

To learn more about Tracey's style, I sat down recently with my dear friend. And by the way, our friendship dates back to the days when she & her then boyfriend, now husband, gave us disco dancing lessons for our club Faces & she shopped in my boutique, Bottega Glaseia.

Barbara Glass: What is your definition of style?

Tracey Tarrantino: Style is a distinct manner of expression about how things are worn. I love fashionable elegance. The way a fabric drapes and moves really makes a difference to me. Coco Chanel & Valentino have influenced my personal Style. Their fit and color combinations are timeless. I am a strong advocate of working with the right proportions that fit and flatter your figure. Trends can come and go but pure style remains forefront of fashion.

BG: What is the one item that you can't live without in your closet?

TT: I cannot live with out my wraps. The first one I purchased was from Bottega Glassia in the 80's. I have been passionate about my capes ever since.

BG: Finish this sentence, "A perfect outfit for me is...."

TT: By day: leggings and a skinny draped cashmere sweater belted and an added scarf. By night a little Black dress trimmed with layers of pearls. I love to finish my look with a wrap and I love using color as an accent.

BG: Where is your favorite place to shop in Chicago?

TT: With so many terrific stores and designers I could have a list from A- Armani to Z-Zara with an Escada & Ultimo in between! Chicago's has a vast amount of fashion talent. Each season more exciting designers and their collections are unveiled. Its a great day to get dressed in Chicago.

BG: What trend would you like to see disappear?

TT: Ripped jeans. Enough said!

BG: What advice would you give to someone who wanted to follow in your footsteps?

TT: Work hard and believe in what you are doing. There is no other way around it. Keep your energy positive. Use your courage to give you the strength to face a challenge. When something goes right tell yourself there's more where that came from and when it doesn't try again! Fear is not a fact.

BG: Tell me something about you that would surprise people.

TT: I love to garden. I have three small dogs. They often are styled and given make overs at home too! Movement is my mantra, and yes, I still love a dance class now after all these years! Classically trained with Stone and Camryn but had my feet in the soil luckily with Chicago's Gus Giordano and Lou Conte studios. Today I embrace a good yoga class and am still attending ballet classes at Salt Creek Ballet. Namaste!

Lash Enhancers

There is a new innovation in lashes that I've been using that is making my lashes longer, thicker and it's called Latisse. I've been waiting for this product to finally come out and now it's available to everyone who wants thicker longer lashes!

Latisse is a solution that is a prescription treatment used to grow lashes, making them longer,thicker and darker. Unfortunately thin short lashes are not yet covered by insurance and Latisse costs $120 for a months supply. It is painted on the skin at the base of the lashes once a day, like liquid eyeliner.

The catch about this product is the side effect known as increased iris pigmentation in light-brown and hazel-eyes since they have more pigmented cells in their iris. Also darkening of the skin along the lash-line, redness of the eyes, or itchy lids. A lot of people think that the more product the better results but in this case if you put too much you have more chances of getting it in your eye, which puts you at a higher risk of your eye color to darken.

Personally I have had no bad side effect but I have only been using the product for 1 week and I need a few more weeks to really notice a difference. The brushes that come with Latisse are a little large and many people I know are complaining about the brush and are using their own eyeliner brush instead. If you are one of those people using your own brush remember to always clean before and after use with a disinfectant.

Most people say that it takes 8 weeks to see a difference but 16 full weeks to notice a dramatic difference but the growth eventually plateaus. What Latisse is believed to do is affect the growth (anagen) phase of the eyelash hair cycle and in 2 ways: 1st it increases the length of this phase and 2nd, it increases the number of hairs in this growth phase but the exact way it works is unknown. Only Latisse has been approved by the FDA as a prescription treatment used to grow eyelashes. After discontinuing use of Latisse I have heard from quite a few people different time periods on which their lashes stayed long and thick which ranged from 2 months to 6 months.

If you aren't ready to try Latisse, there are more over the counter options. Most claim to work because of peptides, vitamins or conditioners. Revita Lash conditioner $150, Talika Lipocils $40, Peter Thomas Roth Lashes to Die For $125 and Rapidlash Eyelash Renewal Serum $49.95 just to name a few popular ones. If you are using one of these over the counter options you are still going to have to keep using them daily to keep up your lashes.

Leave it to two fashion mavens like designer Diane von Furstenberg, Chair, Council of the Fashion Designers of America and Anna Wintour, American Vogue Editor to create an event to curb the flood of continual markdowns that began with the Wall Street meltdown and continued as the economy spiraled downward.

On September 10, all 40 Neiman Marcus stores, along with another 700 shops across the U.S., will celebrate "Fashion's Night Out." The event was created in an effort to boost the economy and support the fashion industry, including the NYC garment industry’s 175,000 employees. Talk about a win/win situation: Shopping for fun and shopping to help people hold onto their jobs. Just think of what the recent rebate/ stimulus plan did for the auto industry and its employees in the month of August. Neiman's on Michigan Avenue plans to celebrate from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 10 with a celebrity chef, a fashion show, makeovers, entertainment, a Manolo Blahnik Trunk Show, and lots more. In addition, 40 percent of the proceeds of a $30 T-shirt from the evening will benefit the Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum.

Hope all of us fashionistas can come out to shop on Sept. 10 to support the many jobs associated with the fashion industry.

Before Kathy O’Malley Piccone was elevated to this status, our paths crossed when she worked for me at the local fixture, Faces, the former Gold Coast disco where I was president and co-founder. Today any visitor, frequent or first timer, cannot walk through the doors of Gibson’s, one of our favorite steakhouses, without encountering Kathy. As managing partner, her presence is everywhere in this landmark restaurant that attracts the city's leading politicians, athletes, and anyone who is on the list of who's who in personalities and regulars.

Kathy's style of dress has always been professional with a major dose of sassiness, but it is her ability to connect with the public, with her endearing smile, that is her greatest trademark.

I recently sat down with my friend Kathy to unfold some of her thoughts on style…

Barbara Glass: What is your definition of style?

Kathy O'Malley Piccone: Style is always your personal expression. I try to be Lady like in the way I dress, but always figure flattering. Vintage pulls at my heart strings from time to time and draping is goddess like, so flattering when strategically placed.

I try to ignore "trends" to a point but also want to stay in the loop of things but not be a cookie cutter. And then comes along a HOT item..That I have to have.. Usually something from N.Y. or a hard core rocker piece from L.A. which I'll always soften up..I often find myself in business chic; a feminine, structured look.

Then there are leggings or straight leg pants, and or a mini with the perfect tights, and sweaters or long tops, shoes and all kinds boots - I love love that look! And then, on a special occasion evening, glamour!

BG: What is the one item in your closet you couldn't live without?

KOP: My "Northbeach" leather pants. Oh Sorry two things............ SHOES!

BG: Finish this sentence, "A perfect outfit for me is..."

KOP: Sexy comfy (worn) jeans with my cowboy boots and a sweet top. I am a little bit "country!"

BG: Where’s your favorite place to shop in Chicago?

KOP: All local boutiques, local designers, and stores. Actually I really don't like to shop, I usually do it here out of "necessity" and usually at the last minute, unless I'm on vacation and then I have fun doing it. But I love shopping for someone else!!!

BG: What trend would you like to see disappear?

KOP: Low rise pants where people have muffin tops showing...Don't they have friends to tell them how it looks ? And men with pants hanging off their backside.

BG: What advice would you give to someone who wants to follow in your business footsteps?

KOP: Always try to stay one step ahead of the game .. Stay focused,smile and be pleasant, especially when you’re under pressure because it’s always a special occasion for your customers and you’re making memories. And wear comfortable shoes! Bring at least 2-3 pairs to get you through the shift. (Start with the highest pair of heels or boots and work your way down to the lowest, and at the end of the shift work your way back up. Ha ha! Just have fun!)

BG: Tell me something about you that would surprise people.

KOP: I'm a really a home body girl who loves to cook and iron - it's my therapy! Ha ha! And believe it or not -I am really shy! Aleast when I'm not in my work mode!

Its always nice to know what professionals do at a real photo shoot to help you achieve an airbrushed finish for your wedding photos or even when your just hanging out with your friends taking pictures.

Here are 7 makeup tips that will give you a flawless finish:

1. Foundation is the base for the rest of your makeup so you can choose from a tinted moisturizer for a sheer coverage to a medium to heavy foundation for more coverage. Look for a formula that has light-reflecting pigments because they soften imperfections while brighten your complexion.

2. Shinny makeup with a hint of luminosity adds a youthful radiance to the skin that is beautiful in pictures. Add a shimmery white, champagne or gold pencil in the inner corner of the eyes to make them pop!

3. Shadow in plum or bronze tones brighten your eyes.

4. Blush in pink and peachy hues with a golden cast really warms up the face in a natural way, don't be afraid of hot pink because just a dab on the cheeks looks very natural.

2. Lengthen neck but keep head straight and chin a bit down, many people tend to

lift their chin up and the photos are all neck and throat and very little face showing.

3. For males to achieve the Brad Pitt look bite on your back teeth to pop the jaw bone.

4. Ask the photographer to shoot from above it has a slimming effect on the face.

5. Avoid standing straight to the camera because it expands your body showing your face and body at the widest. Instead hold your head and shoulders angled away from the camera.

6. Keep elbows pointed slightly outward away from your body because if your arm lays flat then it appears to look less toned.

7. Say peaches to give the perfect real smile as it will make your cheeks look perfect and happy.

Fall's Chicest Makeup Accessory

This fall Old Hollywood makeup is the craze; think Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. This look was seen gracing countless runways, such as Gucci, Christian LaCroix and Yves Saint Laurent.

To achieve this look give your skin a radiant complexion by mixing a dot of either Borghese or Armani brightening with your foundation and or moisturizer and apply all over face and lids. Your skin will never go out of style with this look of clean and radiant!

As for your eyes this can be a little tricky using liquid liner. So to make it easier use a black liner as a base then go over it with liquid liner on top of it. Line the top lid of the eyes as close as possible to the lashes. Then take black liquid liner and go over the pencil eyeliner sweeping it up and outward to the corner of the eye. This will give you the "cat-eyed" look.

There are many liquid liners available from matte to shinny finishes so go to the department store and try all different brands on your hand to determine the finish you like and also what applicator feels comfortable to you.

Bold lips painted Red is a must for this fall look. Now you need to decide what shade of red is right for you. Fair complexions should wear a true red, medium complexions wear warm shades with a red/+orange base and for dark skin, burgundy

is best.

Be sure to wear plenty of mascara to create a dramatic effect. My new obsession is Fiberwig (paint on false lashes) available at Sephora. Don't forget to keep your brows full by using a brow powder or wax color to give them extra thickness.

I first met the CLTV TV host, attorney & CEO/Founder Rockit RanchProductions (Rockit Bar & Grill, Sunda, The Underground, all of which earned him US “Operator of the Year), when we both volunteered to be "Principal For The Day" at Lake View High School. One of his pet projects is the Chicago 20016 Olympic Committee Director of Cultural Relations.

BD: I’m all about diversity, recycling, supporting locals and trying random things all over the city… so anywhere that speaks to me at whatever time I come across it… for example, in the last month alone I bought some beat up tshirts from the salvation army… a smooth fedora from a cute little boutique owned by a local couple on Clark called p&l… some cool shorts from burton… and a new handmade suit from Oxxford, which, if you don’t know, is one of the last handmade suit factories in the country, is one of the most respected in the entire world for the last century, and is located right here in Chicago. (and needs our support to stay strong so buy American, buy Chicago).

BG: What trend would you like to see disappear?

BD: Guys that wear jeans way to skinny, or way too baggy…

BG: What business advice would you give to someone who wants to walk in your footprints?

BD: In addition to continually taking classes in everything you can and train your mind to be a sponge… surround yourself with people who have elements of what you want, ask to follow/help them or just watch them when you can. Learn every minute, work every minute, even if your not paid or not sure it will help you get where you want to be… and keep going… don’t let haters, doubters or any kind of miserable negativity bring you down. The people that really make it big on their own and are happy dealt with the same and will tell you the same… and will even keep you motivated and going in the best direction possible (which is why you want to work to surround yourself with them by any means necessary).

BG: Tell me something about you that would surprise people.

BD: I want to be a stay at home dad, keep writing my blog www.aChicagoThing.com between changing diapers and baby naps, and help Chicagoans be really good at fundraising and executing philanthropic efforts with some of the tricks I have learned over the years. As well as just reach their dreams and have the best lives possible while always continually trying to make this the best city ever to live in!

We all know that fashion mirrors the past and such is certainly the case for fall 2009 with the revival of pinched or exaggerated shoulders from the influence of the 80's. No, I'm not talking about Norma Kamali or Claude Montan's football shoulder pads as in "I am women, hear me roar." It's a quiet & elegant approach to an emphasis on shoulders, one of the sexiest parts of a women. The trend has made its way onto the runway with labels like Givenchy, 3.1 Phillip Lim and, most noticeably, Balmain, who features the look in almost all of their recent designs, leading the pack. Julie Darling: Classic and timeless with a bit of a twist. For instance, narrow black pants and fitted sweater with blue/black animal print Lanvin pumps to keep it interesting".

BG: What is the one item that you can't live without in your closet?

JD: Like many women it's the perfect oversized handbag. Right now it's one from Cole Haan. Yes, I'm guilty of carrying everything but I'm ready to get on a plane at a moments notice which has happened recently!"

JD: The little black dress, Hermes scarf tied on my handbag, black stiletto pumps" - "Sexy, confident, timeless, and perfect for any occasion.

BG: Where is your favorite place to shop in Chicago?

JD: Barney's with my favorite fashion expert Cuetrice "Q" Scott". "Hands down he is the quintessential stylist. He understands my personal style and he understands lines in almost an architectural sense. He knows what will work without me being there to try things on.

BG: What trend would you like to see disappear?

JD: Anything that it baggy, unfitted and loose". "A woman should show her shape.

BG: Tell me something about you that would surprise people.

JD: I'm an avid animal lover and have a 120 lb Newfoundland named Lola. If I wasn't a publicist and an event marketer I'd own a doggy day care with all the amenities as well as food, toys, clothing.

How to Make Your Color Last and Keep Your Hair Healthy in the Summer Sun

Keeping your hair healthy and your color from fading in the summer sun can be a challenge. Here are a few tips for keeping your hair looking its best.

First, it is essential that you use color safe hair products – especially shampoo and conditioner. Most upscale salon brands are color safe. Most drugstore brands are not. Spend the money on good products that won’t strip your color and will keep your hair healthy. After all, if you’re spending money on your color, you should also spend some money to protect it. Your colorist can recommend what products would be best for you. As a general rule, stay away from products with a high alcohol content.

Second, consider using a UVA protection spray leave in conditioner during the summer months. Especially if you’ll be spending extended time in the sun (swimming, boating, playing tennis, etc). This will go along way in preserving your color. I recommend Essential Repair Anti Fade conditioner by Pureology used on a daily basis. In fact, I recommend throwing a bottle in your beach bag and combing it through your hair several times a day when you’re spending the day in the sun. And, of course, if you really want to protect your hair, consider wearing a hat or scarf when in the sun for an extended time.

Regardless of how careful you are, by summer’s end your hair will undoubtedly need a boost. Many salons offer protein and keratin treatments that can significantly help restore depleted hair by infusing it with omega 3 fatty acids and other important nutrients to bring back bounce and shine. The overly cautious may even opt to receive these treatments periodically throughout the summer to keep hair healthy and looking good. Consult with your Colorist or Stylist for a plan that’s best for you.

She studied Fashion Design & Marketing in London, received her MBA in International Business and took business & fashion classes at the well respected St. Martin. While studying in London she claims she did every job imaginable including working for Louis Vuitton to working backstage during London Fashion Week for designer stars like Alexander McQueen & Antonio Beradi. She states, "My experiences were the best education and are my greatest awards." Thea's style is indeed a reflection of her rich background, dressing in a classic Burberry look with an edge, preferring dresses & skirt suits. She is definitely one of Chicago's style leaders.

TR: A very large handbag. My bags seem to get bigger, but the designs and fabrications keep evolving, it is amazing. They are practical and they contain everything we need.

TR: A beautifully designed dress, outfitted with a fabulous (Burberry) coat, accessorized with the perfect handbag and stunning shoes.

BG: Where is your favorite place to shop in Chicago other than Burberry?

TR: Lately, it is the Broadway Antiques Market. Recently, I was shopping for furniture and found my fate in a gorgeous blond mink fur capelet in immaculate condition, for less than a fraction of the current retail prices. The assortment and quality of goods there are impressive, and the staff is helpful and friendly.

BG: What trend would you like to see disappear?

TR: The dreadful wearing the pants belted below the bum. It is horrible and needs to die FAST!

BG: Tell me something about you that would surprise people.

TR: My experience in the world of fashion and retail is extremely diverse and has been very entertaining. I once worked in a children's showroom in the Atlanta Apparel Mart. The owners asked if I wanted to join them at a concert their sons were playing in. Little did I know, they were the parents of Chris and Rich Robinson, The Black Crowes.

Perfect Hair for Weddings & Parties

When doing your hair for special events and parties, remember that your hair is just another accessory – like your belt and shoes – it should go with the outfit. Nothing too formal for a more casual outfit or occasion and vice versa. For instance, a traditional, more elaborate upstyle (like a traditional french twist) rarely looks right with a summery garden party dress and sandals. In contrast, something entirely different may be called for when wearing a Vera Wang gown. You always want your hair to complement your outfit, not compete with it. For in salon do’s – always let your stylist know what the event is and what you are wearing so that he can give you just the right look for you. For more formal occasions like weddings, I recommend having your hair done in the salon, if possible. For more casual events, and if you’re doing it yourself, keep it simple. Pulling your hair back into a low, soft and loose bun (chignon) may be a good choice. For straight, longer hair, a small braid in the front bang area pinned back with simple bobby pin or festive hairpin can also be a good look (think Jennifer Aniston). Browse through fashion magazines (and even celebrity rags!) for ideas you like and can easily imitate at home. Just remember, it’s about the whole look – and your hair is your most important accessory!

It seems that Chicago women have gone crazy for cardigans! Sure, we remember seeing cardigan sweaters in past decades like the 50's - think of Grace Kelly in films like Rear Window and High Society, but it seems that, as of late, cardigans have had a resurgence of sorts. I've noticed lots of women in the city, especially on cool summer nights, turning to cardigan sweaters as opposed to light jackets or shawls - which can tend to look dated and stuffy. Skip the bulky, heavy sweaters and look to cotton, silk blends or even lightweight cashmeres to pull off the look.

Be a Curls Best Friend!

Having trouble with those curls turning to frizz in Chicago summer humidity? A few simple tips will help you stave off the frizz on even the muggiest of days. First, don’t over condition –too much conditioner weighs down curls, adds weight and depletes shine. But the real trick to beautiful curls is in the styling and finishing of the hair. Apply a lightweight, cream-based product to towel dried hair and give your curls a light scrunch while lifting roots from ends up. Let hair air dry completely or dry it using a bowl-shaped diffuser, from the ends up, being careful not to disturb the curl (the more you move curl while drying, the more frizz you’ll have). When curl is completely dry, apply a small amount of moisture-based pomade on the edges and gently run fingers through your hair, or simply shake the curl out. Curls spread themselves out when dry, so don’t try to achieve volume when drying or you’ll just create more frizz.

Throw the pomade in your purse, and re-apply small amounts on the ends throughout the day if the frizz starts to creep up!

As I was looking at some videos of the Fall collections from 2009, I came across Halston's. While the clothes were very pretty & very Halston, ala Jackie Kennedy & other celebs when Halston was at his rise & partying at Studio 54, what really caught my attention was the movie itself. The movie, which features Dree Hemingway & was produced by Colonel Blimp, is clearly an artistic dream. Included are some past art forms along with the floating mylar balloons which I first saw at a party a the famous Chicago disco, Faces, where I was the President/owner & at the Andy Warhol exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago. Definitely a great video worth checking out!

Last night I dropped by Neiman Marcus who was hosting the kick-off party for the Joffrey Ballet, which officially begins September 25, 2009 at the Palmer House. Designer Pamela DeVos for Pamella Roland, whom I discovered on a trip to Michigan during a trunk show & used last fall for a fashion shoot at the Yacht Club for Lake Magazine, was the guest designer of the evening. It was great to see lots of Chicago's fashionable women at the party to provide support for the Joffrey Ballet. Yes, Chicago does love a large dose of culture.

When it comes to Chicago fashion & style, no best dressed list would be complete without the addition of restaurantuer Donald J. Madia. Is there anyone in Chicago or beyond, like many epicurean tourists, who hasn't heard of, or dined at, Blackbird, Avec, or his newest restaurant, Publican? Or partied at The Violet Hour & Sonotheque? When I had dinner with Karl Lagerfeld several years ago, I exposed him to dinning at my favorite Donald Madia restaurant, Blackbird. Of course he too was impressed which is no easy feat with a international traveler & designer. I recently celebrated my b-day at my favorite choice and sat down to interview my friend Donald.

Barbara Glass: What is your definition of style?

Donald Madia: I loved the cut of the suits in Bobby Kennedy's '68 presidential campaign. Also, Fellini films and any early Fred Astaire films, circa 1920's through the 40's.

BG: What is the one item that you can't live without in your closet?

DM: A pair of Gucci wide-leg flares that I wear with dress shoes or Chuck Taylors.

BG: Finish this sentence - a perfect outfit for me is...

DM: I don't think about things like that.

BG: Where is your favorite place to shop in Chicago?

DM: Barneys New York. If in New York, Leffot for shoes and Apt. 9 and Hejfina

DM: I can't answer that because I like everything. To paraphrase Nicolas Cage in Wild at Heart, "This is a snakeskin jacket! And for me it's a symbol of my individuality, and my belief...in personal freedom."

Recessionistas Unite! Hair Tips for a Tough Economy

Beauty treatments can often be the first things to go when watching your budget, and I am often asked what a girl can do to save money and still look her best. First, I always think a good cut is worth paying for because the shape grows out much better and can last longer -- allowing you to significantly extend the time between cuts. Do some research online and talk to friends to find the best salon in your area. Go to one of those top salons -- even if you see the least expensive stylist or colorist, they will be talented if the salon has a serious training program.

If you can't stomach the price tag for even a junior stylist at a top salon, here's another option -- find out if the salon offers workshops as part of their training program for stylists and colorists. Advanced workshops in serious salons are supervised and taught by senior stylists with years of experience. Those salons are always looking for workshop models and the cost is nominal -- usually between $10 and $20. You'll still walk out with a better cut or color than you would get at a salon of lesser quality.

Last night, in spite of the rain, the challenge of weaving through cluttered traffic with President Obama 's visit to Chicago & the amazing perfect game by Chicago's White Sox, I attended the party at Michael & Michael's Salon, honoring the special appearance of Oribe, the incredible hair stylist to all the best celebs including Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Lopez, Naomi Campbell - oh the list just keeps going on & on darling! At his private demonstration, before the other chic guests arrived, I watched the very charming & friendly Oribe move his talented hands through model's hair to create his magic using products from his line of beauty enhancements. Overall, the party was fantastic - and everyone left with full tummies courtesy of a delicious assortment of treats from MK Restaurant & a goody-bag of some of Oribe's hair products & gift certificates.

The former, and Emmy Award winning, host of WTTW's Check, Please!, Amanda now serves as the EVP of PR for the Experiential Agency, one of the city's leading PR firms. Barbara: What is your definition of style?

Amanda Puck: Style is easy, chic and glamorous, it’s a true form of expression. It's also about bending the rules a little bit, like sequins for day.

B: What is the one item that you can't live without in your closet?

AP: It is, and always will be, my Faliero Sarti scarf I bought at L'Eclaireur in Paris. I wear it almost every day and it goes with me everywhere. It’s a light gray cashmere with silver metallic sparkle. It also reminds of what a great time I have when I go there.

At a London auction this weekend, Marilyn's special bra, specifically designed to enhance her body, was sold to a Honk Kong buyer for $5,200. I guess this could be considered breast enhancement before there was surgery! Oh well, what fabulous looking woman today can't say that she owns a pair of Spanx or a Wonder Bra.

I've been noticing lots of women this season spicing up otherwise plain, simple looks with beautiful, bold necklaces. Everyone, from Lanvin, to the first lady Michelle Obama, to women on the streets of Chicago seem to be following this trend; and the best part is it doesn't have to be too expensive. Not everyone (like myself) can't indulge in paying designer prices for every new trend, but often, with a little detective work, you can find some great looks at a third of the price at stores like Forever 21 and H&M. Regardless of where its from, a bold necklace is sure to make a eyes turn when you enter the room!

The Royals, both established set & younger, continue to have a love affair with hats, as they influence their American cousins on the art of headwear. It's always go to the top for the best and that would be master Milliner of London (yes, we know he is Irish) Philip Treacy. He has worked with designers from Alexander McQueen to Karl Lagerfeld, along with celebrities like Madonna. In fact, Camilla married Prince Charles while wearing the work of Phillip Treacy, so you know it must be luxurious!

While Philip may be the best, it seems that everyone, from Burberry, to Hermés to my friend Tenisha, is embracing this "heady" (sorry for the pun!) trend.
